Jax Facts


It was named after General Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of Florida who never visited the city.

It is the most populous city in Florida and the biggest city by area in the continental U.S. It is the 14th largest city in the United States in population.

It is a huge beach community. It is located near Florida’s beaches such as Jacksonville Beach, Ponte Vedra, Neptune Beach, St. Augustine and Atlantic Beach and they are all within an hour drive.


It is located in the northeast corner of the state so hurricanes are less likely to hit compared to other tropical areas.

It was Hollywood before there was a Hollywood. It was known in the 1910s as “The Winter Film Capital of the World.”

It was named one of the top five “Up and Coming" cities in the United States by Good Morning America in 2006.

It is a red, white and blue city. It has two major military bases, the Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport, along with a commercial base.

The largest urban park system in the United States operates in Jacksonville.

The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is the second largest animal collection in the state.

The annual Jacksonville Jazz Festival is the second-largest jazz festival in the United States.

It is the birthplace of the father of the personal computer, Don Estridge. With this, one of the most important cultural and social trends of the past was rooted either in Jax or people from Jax.

It is home to Florida"s largest Filipino-American community.


Jacksonville has more jaguars than the NFL team. The team"s owners have hosted the Jacksonville zoo"s "Range of the Jaguar" exhibit.

It hosts the AT&T Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament, the biggest kingfish fishing tournament annually.

One of the few cities in Florida where you can cruise.

The oldest Shrine Temple in Florida is the Morocco Temple which was built in 1910-11.

Some of Jacksonville’s best attractions and museums are free because of the Free November access.

It has the largest outdoor cocktail party. The states of Florida and Georgia have a rivalry game annually. This party has been dubbed as the largest outdoor cocktail party because of the tailgating and outdoor parties that go hand in hand.
